UGC platforms compared

Not all UGC platforms work the same way. Before you pick one, it helps to understand the three broad approaches — and what each one actually costs you in time, money, and headaches.

1. DIY sourcing

Find creators yourself through hashtags, TikTok search, or cold DMs. It's free on paper, but you carry everything: vetting strangers, negotiating rates, writing contracts, chasing deadlines, and sorting out usage rights — often with people who have never worked with a brand before. DIY can work for a one-off experiment, but it rarely scales.

2. Open marketplaces

Marketplaces give you a searchable pool of creators and handle payment. That's a real step up — but you're still the project manager. You brief, you vet, you chase, you mediate when something misses the mark, and licensing is usually a template checkbox rather than a genuine agreement. Volume is high; consistency is on you to enforce.

3. Managed platforms

A managed platform sits between you and the creator and runs the process for you. At Local Lens Content — we're one of these, so read this section with that in mind — the model looks like this:

  • Vetted creator network — quality is screened before creators ever see your brief
  • Managed matching — a real person pairs your brief with the right creative style
  • Concept approval before filming — you shape direction before production starts
  • Structured revisions — one concept round and one content round, in writing
  • Per-project licensing — usage rights accepted by both sides on every project
  • Verified reviews — ratings only from brands and creators who completed a real project
  • One dashboard — briefs, concepts, feedback, delivery, and payment in one place

The trade-off: you don't get to browse thousands of profiles and haggle on price. You get a curated match, a structured process, and one accountable team instead.

Which is right for you?

If you have an in-house marketer with time to spare, DIY or a marketplace can work. If you'd rather submit one brief and receive finished, licensed content without managing anyone, a managed platform is built for exactly that. Either way, read our guide to hiring UGC creators first — the briefing and concept-approval steps matter no matter which route you take.

Try the managed approach

Submit a brief. We'll handle the matching, the concepts, the revisions, and the licensing.
